Three new genes involved in lung cancer development

It seems that genetics will show us the key for detecting lung cancer and curing it no matter what some people say. This is because in the last few years more and more genetic studies have discovered genes that are responsible for triggering lung cancer.

One of the latest news was that a group of researchers from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has discovered three genes that are involved in 20% of the cases of lung cancer. These genes are localized on the 14th chromosome and researchers say that two of them have a major impact in the process of intrauterine development of the lungs.

It seems that cancerous cells have the property of reactivating genes that are only active during the intrauterine stage of human development. The researchers from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory have discovered the gene mutation that is responsible for the reactivation of the growing genes and concluded that by inhibiting these genes the lung cancer will stop from evolving.

These genes are the TTF1, the NKX2-8 and the PAX9. They seem to interact for reactivating another fetal gene that will lead to lung cancer development. This gene mutation was also proven to have an important role into lung cancer reoccurrences.

Researchers that are only analyzing one gene are ignoring the fact that the answer to lung cancer might be hidden in more genes that are acting simultaneously. Mutations on these genes are the ones that determine what the symptoms of the lung cancer patient will be and also how the answer to the treatment will be. The study lead in the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has proven that the tumors appearing due to this gene mutation are reversible. In the future after more researches will be done, treatment might be applied on a mass scale on lung cancer patients.

Genetics has developed so much in the last few years and plays such an important part in the mankind evolution and the only thing that is regrettable in this thing is that too many lives get to be lost until a proper genetic treatment is found.
